Silo Fire Emergency & Safe Silo Emptying
A silo fire can leave smouldering, wet or compacted material that can no longer be discharged normally. Bluepower provides remote-controlled material removal for industrial silos across Europe.

AFTER THE FIRE
What Happens After a Silo Fire?
Extinguishing a silo fire is often only the first stage of the recovery process. Material remaining inside the silo may still be hot, smouldering, wet, compacted or unable to discharge normally.
Smouldering Material
Material may continue to smoulder after the main fire has been extinguished.
Hidden Hotspots
Heat can remain deep inside stored bulk material and be difficult to access.
Wet Material
Firefighting water can change material properties and prevent normal flow.
Blocked Discharge
Swollen or compacted material can block outlets and prevent gravity discharge.
Compacted Material
Material can bridge, cake or become unstable inside the silo.
POST-FIRE SILO CHALLENGES
Why Silo Material Becomes Difficult to Remove After a Fire
1 — Firefighting Water & Material Compaction
Firefighting water can cause grain, feed, biomass and other bulk materials to absorb moisture, swell or compact, making normal gravity discharge difficult.
02 — Blocked Silo Discharge & Material Bridging
Wet or fire-damaged material can block the silo outlet or form stable bridges above partially emptied areas, preventing conventional discharge.
03 — Smouldering Material & Hidden Hotspots
Heat can remain deep inside stored material after the visible fire is extinguished, affecting how and when the silo can be safely emptied.
THE BLUEPOWER SOLUTION
Remote-Controlled Silo Emptying After a Fire
When normal gravity discharge is no longer possible, Bluepower provides remote-controlled material removal from industrial silos.
Our equipment can work directly with difficult bulk material inside the silo, helping remove wet, compacted, burnt or non-flowing material after a silo fire.
Remote operation reduces the need for personnel to work directly inside hazardous material zones and helps prepare the silo for inspection, cleaning, repair and production recovery.
REMOTE OPERATION
Reduce personnel exposure inside hazardous material zones.
DIFFICULT MATERIAL
Remove wet, compacted, burnt and non-flowing bulk material.
RECOVERY & RESTART DIFFICULT MATERIAL
Prepare the silo for inspection, repair and return to operation.
FROM INCIDENT TO RECOVERY
How We Respond to a Silo Fire Emergency
Every silo fire and post-fire material situation is different. Bluepower evaluates the silo, stored material, access conditions and discharge challenges before determining an appropriate approach for material removal.
1 Assess the Situation→
We review the silo, stored material, fire history, access conditions and current discharge problems together with the site team.
2 Plan the Removal→
Based on the material condition and silo configuration, an appropriate remote-controlled material removal approach is determined.
3 Remote Removal→
Bluepower equipment is used to remove blocked, compacted or non-flowing material while reducing the need for personnel to work directly inside the silo.
4 Prepare for Recovery
Material removal creates access for further inspection, cleaning, repair and planning for the return to normal operation.

INDUSTRIAL SILO APPLICATIONS
Silo Fire Recovery Across Bulk Material Industries
Silo fires and post-fire material problems can occur across many bulk material industries. Bluepower supports industrial facilities where stored material has become difficult to discharge due to fire, heat, moisture, compaction or blockage.

1. Grain & Feed
Grain, animal feed and agricultural bulk materials can swell or compact after exposure to heat and firefighting water.

2. Biomass & Wood Pellets
Wood pellets, sawdust and biomass can retain heat, smoulder and become difficult to discharge after a silo fire.

3. Cement & Minerals
Cement, alternative fuels and mineral bulk materials can create challenging removal conditions when normal silo discharge is interrupted

4. Food Production
Sugar, flour, starch, coffee and other food ingredients require controlled handling when fire or moisture affects stored material.

5. Chemicals & Fertilizer
Powdered and granular chemicals or fertilizers can present complex material removal challenges following an incident.

6. Pulp, Paper & Recycling
Fibrous and recycled bulk materials can compact, bridge or retain hotspots following fire and firefighting operations.

BLUEPOWER TECHNOLOGY
Technology for Silo Fire Control & Recovery
Different silo fire and post-fire conditions require different approaches. Bluepower combines specialised no-entry technologies for fire control, material access, blockage removal and silo recovery.
FIRE CONTROL

Atmosphere O₂ Control
Controlled reduction of the oxygen concentration inside a silo can help suppress combustion and reduce the conditions required for continued burning or smouldering.
MATERIAL ACCESS

BinDrill
When compacted or hardened bulk material prevents normal discharge, BinDrill can be used to create controlled access through difficult material without conventional confined-space entry.
BLOCKAGE REMOVAL

BinWhip
BinWhip is designed to break down material build-up and bridging inside silos, helping restore material movement where normal gravity discharge is no longer effective.
HARDENED MATERIAL

Cardox
Cardox can be used in suitable applications to break difficult hardened deposits and material build-up where conventional mechanical methods are insufficient.
Choosing the Right Method for a Silo Fire or Blocked Silo
The appropriate method depends on the silo construction, stored material, fire history, temperature conditions, degree of compaction and the location of any blockage or material build-up. Bluepower assesses the situation together with the site before determining the appropriate equipment and material removal approach.
REAL SILO FIRE CASE
900 Tons of Reactive Material Removed From a Fire-Damaged Silo
Following a silo fire, approximately 900 tons of reactive material remained inside the silo while the normal discharge system was blocked. Previous intervention had caused renewed fire and heavy smoke, requiring a controlled recovery approach.

900 TONS
Reactive material removed safely
0 INCIDENTS
Recordable incidents
THE CHALLENGE
Previously ignited material, continuous gas development and the risk of hidden smouldering made conventional unloading impossible.
THE APPROACH
Bluepower developed a controlled no-entry recovery strategy, including continuous gas monitoring, HSE planning and equipment engineered specifically for the task.
CONTROLLED OPERATION
Material removal was carried out under live conditions with continuous monitoring of CO, H₂S and LEL, combined with daily coordination and structured worksite management.
THE RESULT
900 tons removed safely. Material flow was restored, production impact was avoided and the operation was completed with 0 recordable incidents.
